It’s a premium service, meaning that if you use it beyond the trial period you’ll have to pay, but it’s actually not necessary to buy the service in order to take part in a meeting if you’re invited by someone who has. If you have the full version you can invite clients and colleagues to a meeting you have arranged, see their faces as you talk to them, share screens, work collaboratively and record your meetings for later viewing, or to show to someone who couldn’t attend.
Compared to similar services like Join.me which are offered free, GoTo Meeting has additional features that we believe make it worth the money:
How Do We Use it?
We use GoToMeeting for remote conferencing with clients and colleagues where a higher level of interactivity and a stronger professional identity is required. We find that being able to see the face of the person we’re talking to is quite useful in situations where an emotional response is what counts, and the ability to switch presenters is perfect as it allows everyone in the conference to share their screen.
It’s also possible to Brand your GoToMeeting interface so that your company logo is obvious to all your participants. This can be useful for marketing and building relationships with partners.
Why Not Just Use Skype, or Join.Me?
Join.Me is a service similar to GoToMeeting which is offered free, and Skype is an application that allows face to face communication over the internet. Both these options have their merits in a business context and, crucially, are available free, at least in a basic version.
Despite, or perhaps because of its price-tag, GoToMeeting offers services and features which make it worthwhile for us over and above these free solutions, and may do for you too. In addition to the features mentioned above, GoToMeeting allows users to join a meeting by regular phone as well as over the internet. This is especially useful, for example, if you have a mobile workforce without access to a reliable internet connection. They offer a local dial-in number for most countries worldwide so that call costs are kept to a minimum, even if your conference is international, and there’s an innovative ‘Speaker ID’ function which identifies the person speaking on the screen so that even if several people in the conference are not using a webcam, you’ll never be confused about who’s voice you’re hearing.
The look and feel of GoToMeeting is more professional than its free counterparts, particularly if you take advantage of the branding function (mentioned above) which allows you to display your company logo to all participants.
All that said, it does carry a cost and it may be that Join.Me is a better option for you.
How do I get it?
If you’re a new user and you just want to join a particular meeting, all you have to do is visit this page, put in the code for that meeting, and the rest will happen automatically. You won’t have to pay for or download anything. If you want to download the app, you can either go here and click download, search the apple store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) or sign up for an account through the website here. Signing up and paying allows you to host and control meetings, though there’s a free trial version that allows you to do this for a limited time without paying.
Feel free to contact us if you need any further help or advice about this, or any other software discussed on this site.
